It's as if the flood gates have been opened for experimentation in Tollywood finally. Through the '80s and '90s, 'most' of the Telugu films worked within set formulae which revolved around romance, revenge and sentiment.
Since 2000, the industry has been seeing some effort in trying to work with stories that are different from run-of-the-mill stuff. But with the success of films like Manam, Drushyam and even Gopala Gopala, all of which are totally different from each other, finally, the industry seems to have realized that experiments are the new ‘formula’.
Of course, all the three films had stars which also added to the curiosity quotient. In fact, Gopala Gopala proved that an experiment with top stars can fetch Rs 40 crore share. If the film made Rs 30 crore business and if the producers released the film, it would have made much more say industry insiders.
Since it has now been proven that the Telugu audiences are open to watch different films made with varying budgets, the producers are now keen on making such films. Finally, change seems to be on the horizon.
