    Story:
Gaddam Das (Rajasekhar) is a petty extortionist who kidnaps people for small amounts of money. He plans elaborately not to go wrong, but his philosophy is not to hurt or harass people. One day, Gaddam and his gang get to know that they can make Rs 2 crores, if they kidnap the son of a minister. Though the amount is against Gaddam’s principles, he agrees to pull off the kidnapping. And since then trouble begins for Gaddam gang.

    Artistes' Performances:
Rajaseskhar who is seen on screen after a very long time tries his best to put in a convincing performance. Unfortunately though, he fails. While Vijay Sethupathi underplays his part brilliantly in the original, Rajasekhar misses the subtlety altogether. Since the director also misses out on the essence of the main character, Rajasekhar fails to lead the ‘Gaddam gang’ properly.

Sheena plays the dream girl of Gaddam. But some scenes look too artificial and vulgar as she gets to do nothing more than showing off her glamour.

Achchu and Rajesh who are part of Gaddam Gang put in decent performances. While the roles of Naga Babu and Naresh don’t provide any value addition to the movie.

On the other hand, Sita does not suit her role where she is required to show sentiment and do comedy.
Noel as the criminal-minded minister’s son is good. Yog Jappe as the cop makes no impression with his no-dialogue role. Surprisingly, while his performance was rather good in the original, it barely makes an impression in the remake.
    Technical Excellence:
None of the songs are situational and the overall music by Achchu is pretty below average. On the other hand, background score is too loud. Dialogues are okay while cinematography is good. Editing is decent, though it could have been much better in the second half.
Though the film has been remade scene to scene, director Santosh could not give the same feel as the original. He should not have stretched the climax so much. In fact, it would have been best if the film was wrapped up on a simple note.
Since the story is ordinary, situational comedy and screenplay are the main strengths. Though the director followed the screenplay just like in the original, he failed to bring in the fun element that was the main highlight of the original.
In the original version, the other gang members perfectly complement the lead character. However, in Gaddam Gang, this coordination is totally lacking.

    Highlights:
    • Concept
    • Few comedy scenes
    Drawbacks:
    • Weak direction
    • Lead actors’ performances
BottomLine : A Soul Less 'Remake'

    Story:
Ram or Rajaram (Sharwanand) is an aspiring athlete who dreams of winning the national medal one day. His mother (Pavithra) is a music teacher and supports his son. Into his life comes a burqa-clad girl Khanum or Nazreena (Nithya Menon), who is also his college-mate. Even as he trains for his championship, Ram tries his best to see the face behind the veil. Will he find out who she is? Will their love succeed despite their different religions? Will he win his championship? That forms the rest of the story.

    Artistes’ Performances:
Sharwanand is as good as ever. He plays his part well and does complete justice to his role. He suits the character and almost lives his part. Unlike in Run Raja Run where he got a pretty cheerful character, in Malli Malli Idi Raani Roju, he once again gets back to doing serious roles.
But his body language and his lean physique suit that of an athlete and he is pretty convincing in the latter half of the film where he gets to play a more mature role.

Nithya Menon is her usual best. She is nice in the first half as the college girl who is in love. In the second half, her character ages and she carries it off pretty well. Though you cannot help but wonder if it is too early for her to play such heavy-duty characters.

Tejaswi Madivada as Mehak is the only other character who has considerable screen presence and the Ice Cream girl is an ideal choice as the Malaysian brought-up daughter of Nazreena.
Others like Nassar, Sana, Pavithra and others pull off their parts effortlessly.

    Technical Excellence:
The music for the film has been provided by Gopi Sunder who in the past composed music for Bangalore Days. Since it is a love story, he tried to give a couple of soft melodies both of which are good. There is also the fairly popular number Marhaba which is picturised on Nithya Menon.
Cinematography is decent. But the main drawback is the slow screenplay. After a point, you really wonder when and how the film is going to end. As for director Kranthi Madhav who had earlier made Onamalu, he tries to make a heart-wrenching love story to put across the message that true love can withstand all barriers.

    Plus:
    • Sharwanand
    • Nithya Menon
    • Direction
    Minus:
    • Very slow narration
     Bottomline: 'Pure' Love Story

Chandrababu Naidu in a bid to convince the employees of Andhra Pradesh to shift as soon as possible from Hyderabad to Vijayawada said that operating from Hyderabad felt like operating from a foreign country. And Naidu was not saying it in jest! He was only echoing the sentiments of the Seemandhra people in the State.

Though there is no physical violence, the atmosphere is constantly surcharged with an air of uncertainty and Seemandhra people feel unwelcome thanks to the vitriolic statements of the Telangana leadership and its people every day.

What Naidu meant was the unwelcome attitude and statements of the TRS in Hyderabad, a city which would not have been on the international map but for the efforts of Naidu and YSR.
Kavitha, the daughter of Telangana CM KCR has taken offense at Naidu’s remarks and demanded that he apologize to the people of Telangana. She advised Naidu to shift to Vijayawada if he does not like Hyderabad.

Now this is the same woman who said that Telangana was not a part of India.
“Both Telangana and Kashmir were not part of India before 1947. They were separate nations. But we were forcibly annexed to the Indian Union after 1947. Our troubles have started since then,” said Kavitha in an interview to an English newspaper.

She did not end there. “Parts of Kashmir do not belong to India. We should accept reality and come clean on Kashmir. The international borders should be redrawn. The budgetary allocation for defence spending on the borders can then be utilized for the development of the economy,” said Kavitha in the same interview.

If Naidu should quit Hyderabad because he feels unwelcome, then by the same token Kavitha should quit India because she doesn’t consider herself one or else start a separate movement for independence of Telangana from India.

With his debut film, his director experimented with the style of narration. Well, some did like it. But many felt that since it was the debut film of a mega hero, it would have been best if he stuck to commercial formula.

In fact, mega fans argue that Varun Tej would have had a hit if he chose a different subject from Mukunda.

Of course, Varun Tej hoped that he will make his mark with a non-commerical film. So, he even announced that he would be doing his next with Krish. But looks like he has been cajoled into playing for the galleries.

Given Mukunda’s fate at the box office, Varun Tej has now decided to do a complete commercial film next.

Now, his next film will be with Puri Jagannadh who has just completed Temper. Though the mega camp did look out for other directors, they finally settled for Puri and Puri too has confirmed the news.

Ironically, Varun Tej was supposed to debut with Puri’s film. But since the film did not happen, he chose Mukunda to debut.

New York: A team of researchers from Columbia University has developed a low-cost smartphone accessory or dongle that can perform a test that simultaneously detects three infectious disease markers from a finger prick of blood in just 15 minutes.

Led by Samuel K. Sia, associate professor of biomedical engineering at Columbia's School of Engineering and Applied Science, the device replicates for the first time all mechanical, optical, and electronic functions of a lab-based blood test.

Specifically, it performs an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) without requiring any stored energy as all necessary power is drawn from the smartphone.

"It performs a triplexed immunoassay not currently available in a single test format, HIV antibody, treponemal-specific antibody for syphilis, and non-treponemal antibody for active syphilis infection," Sia explained.

The small device that easily connects to a smartphone or computer was recently piloted by health care workers in Rwanda who tested whole blood obtained via a finger prick from 96 patients.

"A full laboratory-quality immunoassay can be run on a smartphone accessory," Sia noted. This kind of capability can transform how health care services are delivered around the world.

Early diagnosis and treatment in pregnant mothers can greatly reduce adverse consequences to both mothers and their babies. The team developed the dongle to be small and light enough to fit into one hand and to run assays on disposable plastic cassettes with pre-loaded reagents, where disease-specific zones provided an objective read-out, much like an ELISA assay. Sia estimates the dongle will have a manufacturing cost of $34, much lower than $18,450 that typical ELISA equipment runs.

During the field testing in Rwanda, the vast majority of patients (97 percent) said they would recommend the dongle because of its fast turn-around time, ability to offer results for multiple diseases and simplicity of procedure.

"By increasing detection of syphilis infections, we might be able to reduce deaths by 10-fold. We might be able to scale up HIV testing at the community level with immediate antiretroviral therapy that could nearly stop HIV transmissions and approach elimination of this devastating disease," the authors concluded.

The work was published in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
